Penned by Queen Kapi’olani, for her Husband, King David Kalakaua, who had traveled to the mainland under the advisement of his Doctors, as a love song... but later changed to a song of mourning as she completed it. The King never heard the beautiful mele, however, as he sadly passed away while in San Francisco. It has become one of those “chicken-skin” sounds to Hawaiians.
