Aloha Randy! I am not opposed to tabs, per se, but I do feel that it is unintentionally impeading to progress and growth when used in the way it is most often used. Sometimes (rarely) I will provide tabs for things that I feel are important to learn verbatim... But I feel that the best use of tabs is for note taking. Which would require the tablature writer to follow the lesson intently all the while backing it up with repetition through note taking, helping to reinforce the lesson. Anyway, that’s my approach to teaching... Making it all stick!
That makes sense. Thanks. Seems like real music isn’t found on a piece of paper, rather it’s an expression of the soul. What did you call it in one of your videos, an x-factor. It’s the moment when the musician is the music.
Funny, I subscribed to the test period quite a while ago and although I loved Aarons lessons, I didn't stayed because personally I missed PDF tabs to the songs too much. Just came back to ask if this maybe changed and found this thread – doesn't seem to be the case. Anyway, big fan of yours, Aaron, love your videos on Hawaiian Music Supply – keep it up, you're a real ukulele master!
I have been a tab junky since starting the uke. There is SOOOOOO much free stuff out there. Very generous! Fun, fun, fun, but I knew I was missing something. Couldn't anticipate the next chord. Not a clue how to improvise.
Looked at a few online lessons (couldn't find a uke teacher in Montana. I know, I'm shocked too!). Didn't click.
Aaron's lessons are filling the void. Ain't easy but I know this is right.
My goal is to be able to pick up any uke and play it without embarrasing the people around me or myself.
Hey, a guy has to dream.
I joined to learn Hawaiian music, and I need the music.
Hey, I get it. I'm not throwing away any books or deleting downloads and I still play them, but...
...after 6 months of the lessons I can feel the improvement. Short of living in Hawaii, Aaron is the path to Hawaiian soul. Sounds weird, but a very cool song.
As I said before, my goal is to be able to pick up the uke and just play. I'm not saying this is the fastest or eaziest (assuming there is such a thing), it's the nuts and bolts to build on. The real Kung Fu!
IMHO
